WHO: Universal Health Coverage

Universal health coverage is defined as ensuring that all people have access to needed promotive, preventive, curative and rehabilitative health services, of sufficient quality to be effective, while also ensuring that people do not suffer financial hardship when paying for these services

  • The barriers to UHC are political not financial. Countries are at different stages of their journeys to implement UHC.

There is a challenge in engaging and motivating policymakers because UHC is complex and has no single solution.

UHC is a group of issues (eg. maternal health, non communicable diseases, access to emergency treatment, provision of basic medical supplies) - it can be difficult to tell a story about the power of UHC when it is hard to imagine the impact. For example - what does a healthy country look like? Many find it easier to understand what losing their existing health systems might look like

We’ll need to demonstrate that UHC progress is achievable in order to generate enthusiasm and political will to push through these obstacles
